Taking a Shift? Whats in it for me?

So, here at The Shift Mob we keep telling you how great shifts are and that you should apply for as many as you can handle. But why do we think shifts are so awesome? What makes dedicating up to 3 days for no monetary compensation so appealing? Well, to point out the obvious, completing a shift truly gives you work experience in a particular field of interest. But what if you don’t know for sure what specific field that may be? You can try out shifts offering a variety of projects and see which suits your interest. If you’re extremely motivated, you could possibly win a bunch of shifts in one week that dabble in projects across the board. How The Shift Mob Started

In the summer of 2009, iStrategyLabs, an experiential marketing firm out of Dupont Circle, recruited their first interns ever (Perri, Ali, and Jeremy) to come up with a project that had an online and offline element to it. There were endless resources at our fingertips, and we wanted to put those to use while helping out local organizations and people. We proposed several ideas, but weren’t convinced of any single project until we created the The Shift Mob. Recognizing the size of the intern force, recent graduates, and generally talented people combined with the volatile economy, we decided to come up with a campaign that would target those with extra time and organizations with an overload of projects.

The Job Market (and why every bit of experience counts)

The news these days is depressing to say the least. KansasCity.com reports, “Adults with college degrees are now working in minimum-wage jobs traditionally held by teenagers.” The national unemployment rate is at about 10% while states like Michigan have topped 15%. You can’t turn on the television anymore without seeing something about bailouts or the economy.
